The Carolina Panthers and Union County Schools (UCPS) are announcing new pilot programs for Girls High School Flag Football beginning this fall. Carolina Panthers Charities is providing $15,000 in program funding, equipment, and custom Nike school uniforms to support the success of the program.
“The Carolina Panthers are excited to partner with Union County Schools to create these important pilot Girls High School Flag Football Leagues that will provide opportunities and access to the sport of flag football for high school girls,” said Panthers Director of Community Relations Riley Fields. “We are hopeful this effort will serve as catalyst for sanctioning Girls High School Flag Football as a varsity sport in the future.”
The intramural/club-level programs are designed to allow high school girls to participate in the fast-growing sport of Girls High School Flag Football that has been sanctioned as a varsity sport in eight states across the country. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools currently boasts a 24-team league that began in 2022.
“Union County Public Schools is thrilled to be expanding the athletic opportunities for our student athletes to include the growing sport of girl’s flag football,” said Union County Public Schools Director of Athletics Nelson Garner. “We are extremely appreciative of the Carolina Panthers for their support in this endeavor. Having them as a partner is incredibly important to our success.”
Union County Schools’ athletic directors will be hosting interest meetings at their schools in the near future.
