Meet the Director

Mr. Nelson Garner, Director of Athletics

Nelson Garner is the Director of Athletics for Union County Public Schools (UCPS)

Since beginning his career with UCPS in 2005, Nelson served as an athletic director for 5 years at Parkwood High School and 2 years at Cuthbertson Middle School. He has also taught physical education at Shiloh and Porter Ridge Elementary as well as Cuthbertson Middle and Parkwood High School. Over his 14 year career in UCPS, Nelson has coached men’s and women’s soccer at Porter Ridge, Piedmont, Cuthbertson and Parkwood High Schools. During that time he has won 2 state titles while coaching the men and women at Cuthbertson.

Nelson is a graduate of James Madison University where he majored in Kinesiology while playing football for the Dukes. Upon graduation, he spent seven seasons playing football in the Arena Football League before beginning his teaching career. He completed a Masters degree in Sport and Recreation Sciences in the summer of 2016.
