UCPS-header-2

Two Alumni From The Same UCPS HS Make It To NFL

Two of Union County’s own have made it to the NFL which itself is an amazing feat. What makes these two unique however is that they both came from Weddington High.

The odds of a high school player going to the NFL is very slim with 1,028,761 players playing high school football in the 2022-2023 school year alone.

Only 77,204 players go on to play football at the college level in the NCAA’s three divisions.

Only 17,156 players in 2023 were eligible for the draft with only 259 players selected by NFL teams.

This means that only 1.5% of the 17,156 draft eligible players had a chance to play on an NFL team.

Even if you are drafted you still need to make the 53 man roster of the team that drafted you.

This feat was accomplished by not only one player but two who played together on the same Weddington football team.

Malik Mustapha

Mustapha is a very athletic safety totaling 67 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss, a half sack, 1 interception, 3 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble as one of Wake Forest’s team captains.

At Weddington Mustapha played two years on varsity and was a strong running and defensive back.

The 49ers look to use #6 Mustapha to bring depth at the safety position for the 2024 season.

Shipley

Shipley is a very versitile running back racking up 3,350 career yards from the line of scrimmage and 33 career touchdowns over three seasons at Clemson.

At Weddington Shipley played three years on varsity and was also a strong running and defensive back.

The Eagles look to use #28 Shipley as the third option at running back for the 2024 season.
