State Championship Spring Recap 2022

GOBS OF GOLD FOR CUTHBERTSON & UCPS MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The Cuthbertson Men’s team won their second straight team 4A state championship in Outdoor Track one year after winning the 3A State Meet Championship. Cuthbertson athletes won three events with the lone individual winner coming in the 400 Meter Run as Killian Fahy finished the lap in 47.23 seconds to get the win. The Cavs Relay team of Brad Sweeter, Keenan Jackson, Fahy, and Reece Morgan also won a pair of relays, earning victory in the 4X100 and 4X200 relays with times of 41.57 seconds and 1:25.90, respectively.

UCPS athletes claimed 1st, 2nd, & 4th place in the 1600M Run with Weddington’s Caden Townshend finishing in 4:08.30, Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney in 4:09.62 and Weddington’s Isaac Clark in 4:17.60.  Laney also took home gold in the 3200M Run.

Porter Ridge’s Brandon Benitez won 2nd place in the 110M Hurdles with Weddington senior Cameron Wright coming in 3rd.

On the field, senior Glenn Ford of Marvin Ridge jumped 46-07.00 to place 2nd in the Triple jump. Sun Valley athletes hit the record books with two 1st place finishes for junior Zachary Moore in the Shotput & Discus Wheelchair competitions and two 2nd place finishes for senior Denmar Chambers in the Shotput & Discus competitions.

Cuthbertson’s Carson Hegele took home a 4A NCHSAA  Sportsmanship Award as well as a 2nd place finish in the Pole Vault.

In the 2A & 3A Divisions, Emmanuel Williams of CATA finished 2nd in the 800M and Aaron Higgins of CATA finished 3rd in the long jump. Nathanial Rivers of Parkwood was 2nd in the shot put and the Monroe boys 4X400M Relay team of Jaikhob Covington, Brajon Allen, Isaiah Kennedy, & Bryce Davis finished 2nd.

CAVS WIN GOLD; WARRIORS, MAVS & PARKWOOD TAKE TOP HONORS IN WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Cuthbertson Cavaliers Women’s team raced to an impressive 64-58 team win over Mallard Creek in the 4A Women’s Competition. Cuthbertson capitalized on the individual win by Charlotte Bell in the 800 Meter Run, as she crossed in 2:12.23 with teammate Justine Preisano claiming second. They also got a relay victory in the 4X800 Meter Relay as Lily Fierick, Lillian Nasta, Gabi Lassiter, & Alyssa Preisano combined to post a time of 9:12.43 to get the win. The State Championship is Cuthbertson’s second straight team title after the Lady Cavaliers claimed the 3A Championship a year ago.  Cuthbertson’s Caroline Palmer took home a 4A NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award.

Other UCPS athletes made the record books with Elizabeth Ritter of Weddington placing 2nd in the 3200 Run, and Marvin Ridge teammates Aria Wegh taking 2nd in the 300M Hurdles, and Lauren Fleming winning 3rd in the 200M Dash, 

On the field, Kendall Ford of Weddington placed 2nd in the Pole Vault and Cuthbertson’s Elizabeth Sawicki won 3rd place in the Shotput.

In the 3A Division, Emma Barnes of Parkwood finished 3rd in the 300M Hurdles with a time of 46.65.

MARVIN RIDGE CAPTURES 4A DUAL TEAM TENNIS GOLD & MVP TITLE

Marvin Ridge Men’s Tennis captures the 4A Dual Team state competition with a 17-2 record over #4 ranked Green Hope. 

Marvin Ridge athletes Tyler Komito is named the 4A MVP while Aryan Vinay takes an NCHSAA Sportsmanship award.

UCPS was also represented in Dual Team championship play by Weddington.

Doubles Draw, Rish Reddy & Harrison P. Williams of Marvin Ridge advanced to the semi-finals.

WEDDINGTON FINISHES STRONG IN 4A MENS LAX

The Weddington Warriors were Regional Champions for the first time in program history at the 4A Level, returning to the 4A Men’s Lacrosse Championship for the first time since winning three straight 1A/2A/3A State Championships from 2017 to 2019.  Weddington finished the season 19-4 after falling to Middle Creek in 9-8 in the Championship.  Weddington’s Ben Wolf was awarded an 4A NCHSAA Sportsmanship award.

Porter Ridge, Marvin Ridge & Cuthbertson also represented UCPS in the 4A Championships. Marvin Ridge won the early matchup vs Cuthbertson and advanced as far as the 3rd round

SIX TEAMS REP UCPS IN 4A & 3A BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

Five schools represented UCPS in the 4A Baseball Championship Playoffs including Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Porter Ridge, Sun Valley, and Weddington.

Marvin Ridge had an impressive tournament winning games over Charlotte Catholic and fellow UCPS opponent Weddington before falling to TC Roberson in the 3rd round.
NCHSAA 4A BRACKET

Parkwood represented UCPS in the 3A playoffs, shutting out Hickory in the 1st Round 10-0.

MAVERICKS OUTSCORE 27-4 IN 4A SOFTBALL; 7 TEAMS REP UCPS

Marvin Ridge took it all the way to the Regional round of the 4A Softball Championship Playoffs, outscoring their opponents, 27-4.  After winning games against Porter Ridge, Northern Guilford, NW Guilford, and South Meck, Marvin met eventual championship contender East Forsyth, losing 2-0.

Five schools represented UCPS in the 4A Playoffs including Cuthbertson, Marvin Ridge, Piedmont, Porter Ridge, and Weddington.
4A SOFTBALL BRACKET

CATA and Parkwood represented UCPS in the 3A playoffs with Parkwood advancing to the 2nd round after a victory over Southern Guilford 11-4.

UCPS TEAMS QUALIFY FOR 4A WOMEN’S LACROSSE

In 4A Women’s Lacrosse, three UCPS teams qualified for post-season play:  Cuthbertson, Marvin, & Weddington. 

Marvin & Weddington both advanced to the third round where Marvin fell to Northwest Guilford and Weddington prevailed over Hough 22-9.  Weddington met the eventual state championship contender Charlotte Catholic in the 4th round.

WIELER WINS 2ND; SIX UCPS ATHLETES PLAY IN 4A GOLF ‘SHIP

Six UCPS golfers qualified to play in the 4A Men’s Golf State Championship.  The 2-day tournament was held in Pinehurst, NC at Pinehurst CC (No. 8) on May 9-10, 2022.

4A INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

4A TEAM RESULTS

WARRIORS GO TO 4TH ROUND; CATA & FOREST HILLS COMPETE IN 3A&2A

The Weddington Warriors represented UCPS well in the 4A Women’s Soccer Championships advancing to the 4th round before falling to Page.  The Weddington defense allowed only one goal in their first three post-season matches versus Asheville, Cuthbertson, & Independence.

Cuthbertson, Marvin, Piedmont, and Porter Ridge also qualified to compete in the 4A playoffs.

CATA represented UCPS in the 3A playoffs advancing to the 2nd Round after a 3-2 win over Smoky Mountain.
