
Marvin Ridge’s volleyball team ended the season with a win in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 7A state championship on Friday.
The Mavericks defeated D.H. Conley in four sets at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, winning the state championship 25-20, 25-12, 20-25, 25-22.
Marvin Ridge won the title one season after a runner-up finish in the 4A state championship. It is the second state championship in school history, with the first coming in 2018, also against D.H. Conley.
The Mavericks have appeared in three volleyball state championships.
Senior setter Jillian Young was named the Most Valuable Player of the state championship, recording 41 assists, two aces, two digs, two blocks, and two kills in the win.
Natalie Unkrich led the team in kills with 18, Victoria Simons had 12, and Jamie Carnes posted 10 kills.
Beckett Hammers led the team in digs with 14.
Young was also named the winner of the NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award, along with D.H. Conley’s Sydney Carden.
Marvin Ridge’s season ends with a 32-2 overall record. The Mavericks also won the Southern Carolina 6A/7A Conference with a perfect 12-0 record.
