Claire Lyerly Named UCPS Coach of the Year

Claire Lyerly has been a huge part of thebWeddington High community since the school’s opening in 2000. As the head softball coach, she has led her team to numerous successes, including the 2024 Southern Carolina Conference championship and a thrilling run to the North Carolina 4A state championship game. The team finished the season with an impressive 21-5 record, narrowly missing the state title in the finals against Garner Magnet. 

Over her almost twenty four year career, Coach Lyerly has earned widespread recognition, including four conference Coach of the Year awards, as well as district and region honors. The Charlotte Observer and Enquirer Journal have also celebrated her achievements. Recently, she was awarded the North Carolina Governor’s Office Laurel Wreath Award, granted to individuals in North Carolina who have made outstanding contributions to sports or athletics.
