We are thrilled to announce that Coach Capone has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2025 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 Award. This prestigious honor recognizes the top young coaches in the football community who are under the age of 35 and have shown exceptional leadership, talent, and commitment to the sport. Out of all the selected coaches, he is the only high school football coach to receive the (AFCA) 35 Under 35 Award. Coach Capone’s inclusion in this distinguished group is a testament to his dedication to developing student-athletes, his excellence on the field, and his contributions to the game of football.

A Legacy of Excellence at Weddington High School

Coach Capone has become synonymous with success at Weddington High School, where he is the all-time winningest head football coach in school history. Under his leadership, Weddington has achieved remarkable milestones, including three State Championships and the distinction of being part of the winningest football team in school history. Perhaps most notably, Coach Capone led the team to its first undefeated season, a historic achievement that has solidified his legacy as a coach who consistently drives his players to reach their highest potential.

Since taking the reins as head coach, Coach Capone’s offense has been a powerhouse, consistently producing over 5,500 yards of offense every year. His dynamic coaching style has not only led to team success but has also provided opportunities for players to continue their football careers at the collegiate level. To date, Coach Capone has helped send 27 student-athletes to college on football scholarships, including prestigious programs like Clemson, Air Force, Wake Forest, NC State, Georgia Tech, Richmond, Princeton, and Elon, among others.

Recognition for Coaching Excellence

Coach Capone’s achievements have been widely recognized across the state and the football community. He was named the 2017 Weddington High School Assistant Coach of the Year before being honored as the 2018 FNF Coaches NC Coach of the Year. His success continued as he earned multiple accolades, including:

  • 2019 Charlotte Touchdown Club Coach of the Year

  • 2019 undefeated team ranked 2nd in the state and top 100 nationally

  • Southern Carolina Conference Coach of the Year in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022

  • Union County Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2022

  • Weddington Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2022

In 2023, Coach Capone led his team to a State Championship that finished #1 in North Carolina and was ranked #68 in the nation by MaxPreps. Additionally, he was invited to speak at the Glazier Clinic in Charlotte, NC, in 2023 and will return as a speaker at the 2024 Glazier Clinic in Atlanta, GA.

Looking Toward the Future

Coach Capone’s journey doesn’t stop here. In 2024, he will serve as an Assistant Coach for the NC East/West All Star Game, further cementing his reputation as a leader and mentor in the football world. His selection for the AFCA 35 Under 35 Award is a well-deserved recognition of his hard work, commitment, and impact on the sport of football.
