About Us

The Union County Public Schools (UCPS) Athletics Department oversees the school district’s athletics programs and supports student athletes throughout Union County. The department approves the scheduling of all athletic activities and events as well as the use of various school facilities, reviews the overall athletics program to ensure the safety of participants and observers, and verifies the eligibility of all participating students. 

To ensure students have the best possible athletic experience in our schools, the department also provides schools, administrators, athletic directors and coaches with the following support services:

• develops and assists athletic program staff
• identifies and/or provides staff development opportunities for the coaches and players
• assists principals and schools with hiring staff, such as athletic directors, coaches, etc. 
• maintains frequent contact with principals, district coaches, and athletic directors to provide guidance, assist with activities when requested, share information about successful programs, and monitor the effectiveness of the overall programs
• maintains appropriate records of scheduled events, coaching assignments, student activities
• processes the appropriate paperwork for various positions within UCPS to support athletics 
• ensures the athletics division adheres to school board and  North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) policies

The UCPS Athletics Department establishes and maintains relationships with many organizations — including the NCHSAA, the North Carolina Coaches Association, community-based sports advocates, etc. — to enhance the effectiveness and support of the athletic programs throughout the school district.

UCPS athletics programs are purposed as co-curricular activities and are an integral part of the total education and growth experience for student participants. Athletics provide the opportunity for student-athletes to exhibit a progression of physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling students to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations and a variety of learning formats.

In conjunction with the NCHSAA, the UCPS Director of Athletics provides a level playing field for UCPS student athletes through support of programs throughout the system. The Athletic Department provides viable resources for principals, athletic directors, coaches, parents and athletes.
