Union County wrestlers win individual state titles

The N.C. High School Athletic Association Individual Wrestling State Championships concluded at the Greensboro Coliseum with several Union County Public Schools athletes making their mark in both the boys and girls competitions.
 
Parkwood became the first Union County school to win a girls wrestling team title, taking home the 5A championship with 138.5 points. West Rowan was second with 76 points.
 
There were four first-place finishes for Parkwood:
 
Veronika Wilson won the 120-pound weight class, pinning Toriana Murphy (Western Alamance) at the 4:24 mark of the championship bout.
 
Madelyn Korvink won the 138-pound weight class over Nevaeh McCullough (West Rowan). Korvink recorded a fall at the 3:09 mark of the first-place match. The performance earned Korvnik Most Outstanding Wrestler honors for the 5A championship.
 
Riley Johnson won the 145-pound weight class with an 8-0 major decision over Amiah Watts (Dixon).
 
Rylynn Keziah pinned Gabriela Roman Bruno (Smoky Mountain) at the 4:55 mark of the 185-pound first-place match.
 
Here’s how other Parkwood wrestlers completed the tournament:
 
  • Yeily Arreola Ruiz – 4th place, 100-pound weight class
  • Miracle Doetsch – 2nd place, 152-pound weight class
  • Amisha Caldwell – 4th place, 235-pound weight class
Parkwood was not the only Union County school represented in the girls’ wrestling state championships. Sun Valley’s Navaeh Eudy placed fourth in the 6A 114-pound weight class.
 

Boys Wrestling State Championships

Several boys wrestlers from Union County had big showings at the individual championships, led by Piedmont’s Elijah Oakley, who was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the 6A tournament.
 
Oakley won the 150-pound weight class with a 9-2 decision over Hayden Smith (White Oak).
 
He was not the only champion from Union County, though:
 
Jaxon Thomas (Piedmont) won the 113-pound weight class in the 6A tournament after an 8-3 decision against Daniel McDermott (Union Pines).
 
Caleb Edwards (Piedmont) took first place in the 126-pound weight class with an 11-6 decision over Oscar Zelaya (Asheboro).

  • Benjamin Dyer (Parkwood) – 3rd place, 190-pound weight class (5A)
  • Kai Phinazee (Forest Hills) – 2nd place, 285-pound weight class (5A)
